Ferdinand Munk

Managing Partner of the MUNK Group

Ferdinand Munk is the founder and Managing Partner of the MUNK Group. The family business has a history stretching back to 1899 – and Ferdinand Munk has transformed it from a regional craft workshop into a technology and innovation leader in access equipment. His approach combines entrepreneurial responsibility, technical ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to quality – manufactured in Germany.

Four Generations. One Drive. Safety.

Profile

The Munk family's story in access equipment begins in 1899 – with a wheelwright's workshop that went on to produce ladders for tradespeople and farmers. Ferdinand Munk embodies an entrepreneurial spirit that unites this tradition with relentless innovation. As the fourth generation of the family, he co-founded Günzburger Leiternbau in 1982 – at the age of 21 – together with his wife Ruth Munk. Even then, he chose aluminium and steel at a time when the market was still dominated by wooden ladders.

Following the death of his father, he took over Leopold Munk KG in 1991 and merged both companies in 1993 to form Günzburger Steigtechnik GmbH. Under his leadership, this became today's MUNK Group – with over 450 employees, more than 2,500 standard products, and all sites located exclusively in the Günzburg district.

His standard: products that allow no compromise in use. Ferdinand Munk believes that health is the most precious thing a person has – and that access equipment must therefore meet the highest safety standards.

Innovation by Conviction. Quality from Günzburg.

Made in Germany

Ferdinand Munk manufactures exclusively in his home district of Günzburg – at sites in Günzburg and Leipheim. In 2010, Günzburger Steigtechnik became the first company in the industry to receive independent TÜV Nord "Made in Germany" certification. The MUNK Group backs all standard products with a 15-year guarantee.

Under his leadership, the company has filed over 100 patents and intellectual property rights. One of the best-known innovations is the nivello® ladder foot, introduced in 2005 – an articulating base mechanism that significantly improves ladder stability on uneven surfaces. Digital configurators for stairs and crossover platforms now allow customers to plan bespoke solutions in real time.

The MUNK Group manufactures over 2,500 standard products – from household ladders to docking solutions for aircraft maintenance – complemented by custom-engineered solutions for complex industrial requirements.

Setting Standards. Shaping the Industry.

Engagement

Ferdinand Munk is more than an entrepreneur – he actively shapes the industry. Since 1992, he has been a member of the German and European Standards Committee for Fire Service Equipment. His work influences standards such as DIN EN 1147 (fire service ladders) and DIN EN 131 (general ladder standard). Through the MUNK Group's standards advisory service, he passes this expertise directly on to customers and end users.

Within the VDMA, he has held the position of Deputy Head of the Fire Service Technology division since 2021. At national level, Ferdinand Munk serves as Honorary Senator on the BVMW Economic Senate. As Chair of the Commissions on "Labour and Social Affairs" and "Armed Forces and Emergency Services", he advocates for better conditions for German SMEs. Since 2018, he has also served as an Advisory Board Member of the German Fire Service Association, bringing a manufacturer's perspective to the association's work.

Ferdinand Munk is convinced: business and politics must work more closely together. Those who do not understand companies cannot make good decisions for them.

Rooted in Günzburg. Responsible for the Region.

Civic Commitment

Ferdinand Munk has been a member of Günzburg Town Council since 1990 – serving for over 25 years as leader of the Independent Voters' Bloc (UWB). Since 1996, he has also represented residents on the Günzburg District Council.

As Fire Service Adviser to the Town of Günzburg, he advises decision-making bodies on procurement and champions modern equipment for volunteer emergency services – drawing on his own professional expertise and practical experience. Since 2020, as Blue Light and Civil Protection Officer for the Günzburg District, he has been responsible for coordinating emergency and rescue services across the region.

His commitment does not stop at the company gates. Ferdinand Munk supports local clubs in sport, culture, and education, and volunteers for the Malteser youth and children's hospice.

Sustainability. Not a Promise – a Principle.

Values

For Ferdinand Munk, business success is not an end in itself. He focuses on real emissions reductions: around 10,000 m² of photovoltaic panels make the company energy self-sufficient on sunny days. Wood offcuts from production fuel a wood-chip heating system that has nearly halved natural gas consumption. A regional climate forest sequesters CO₂ and strengthens the natural environment in the Bavarian homeland.

As a family entrepreneur, he regards his employees as part of an extended family. Many have been with the company for over 40 years. Innovative initiatives such as the MUNKids Club (holiday childcare) and mobile play rooms for employees' children put the company's commitment to family-friendliness into practice.

For Ferdinand Munk, the combination of commercial success, responsibility, and regional engagement is not a strategy – it is a lived corporate identity.

"Health is the most precious thing a person has. That is why access equipment must never compromise."
